The Importance of Accurate Cheque Wording

A cheque is a legally binding negotiable instrument directing a financial institution to pay a specific sum from the drawer's account. While electronic wire transfers are common, paper cheques and demand drafts remain the standard for property transactions, escrow closings, corporate dividend distributions, and high-value supplier billing.

Because physical cheques are vulnerable to forgery and alteration, banking regulations enforce strict standards on how the legal amount in words must be written.

Double Parallel Crossing ("A/C PAYEE ONLY")

Crossing two parallel lines at the upper-left corner instructs the banking clearing house that funds can ONLY be credited directly to the named recipient’s bank account. It prohibits unauthorized counter cash encashment and deters check theft.

Compliance Rule: Negotiable Instruments Act & UCC Article 3

4 Essential Rules to Prevent Cheque Alterations

  1. Start Immediately at the Left Margin: Never leave blank space between the pre-printed word "Pay" or "Rupees" and the first letter of your amount. Forgers exploit gaps to insert prefix words (e.g. changing "Eight Hundred" into "Five Thousand Eight Hundred").
  2. Always Append the Word "Only": Concluding your written phrase with "Only" signifies the definitive end of the authorized payment sum.
  3. Strike a Horizontal Line Through Remaining Space: After writing the final word, draw a bold, unbroken horizontal pen line through the remaining blank line all the way to the right border.
  4. Cross the Cheque ("A/C Payee Only"): Unless the recipient specifically requires an open bearer cheque to cash at a counter, always draw two parallel transverse lines across the top-left corner to enforce deposit directly into the payee's bank account.
